The Donald Byrd Workshop offers dancers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the technical, choreographic, and theoretical foundations of Donald Byrd's work while gaining insight into what it means to be an artist at Spectrum Dance Theater.
The Byrd Method
The Byrd Method is physically demanding, intellectually rigorous, and emotionally charged.
The approach asks dancers to inhabit the space where classical and contemporary forms intersect, where instinct meets analysis, and where structure and freedom coexist. Artists are challenged to engage both the physical and conceptual dimensions of performance, creating work that is dynamic, responsive, and deeply human.
Workshop Experience
This weeklong intensive is structured to balance rigorous technical training with hands-on creative exploration.
Each day includes:
2 hours and 15 minutes of technique class with Donald Byrd
2 hours and 15 minutes of creative process and repertory exploration
Dedicated break time between sessions
Participants work directly alongside current Spectrum Dance Theater company members throughout the creative process, gaining firsthand experience with the collaborative practices that shape the company's work.
Through this immersive environment, dancers cultivate a stronger awareness of their artistic voice, their contribution to the creative process, and the ways dance can engage with and respond to the world around us.

Donald Byrd's technique emphasizes a relaxed yet powerful and flexible torso combined with highly articulated feet and legs. Dancers develop increasing rhythmic clarity, spatial precision, and physical efficiency through focused technical practice.
