American Theatre Dance, as taught by Tinka and Dannul Dailey, is a class devoted specifically to the art of dance for the musical theatre.
From the 60’s to today, social dance and ethnic dance has played a large part in shaping the way choreography is presented on the American stage. The theatre dance class will focus on those styles of dance from the Charleston to the Lindy, as well as more traditional ethnic movement such as afro-Cuban, Latin, and East Indian, all of which have played a part in the development of the American Musical.
Dannul Dailey
Dannul worked extensively, as principal/soloist, and assistant to Lee Theadore and The American Dancemachine, a Broadway repertory dance company that reconstructed some of Broadway’s classic dances and then performed them in theatres though out the country. He collaborated with Tony award winning director/choreographer Pat Birch on an original Broadway touring show called, “Elvis, An American Musical” as well as worked with such notable choreographers and performers as Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Danny Daniels…and Agnes DeMille. He has choreographed in most of Seattle’s theatres, from Spectrum Dance Theater to The 5th Avenue Theatre. He and his wife currently teach at Cornish College of the Art.
Tinka Gutrick Dailey
Tinka began her training in New York City with the Harkness Ballet and went on to tour the world extensively in a number of Broadway shows as well as being principal soloist with The American Dancemachine for ten years. This company created a living archive of Broadway choreography that would have otherwise been lost. She also served for those ten years as dance assistant to pioneers who changed the role of dance in theatre such as Lee Theadore, Agness DeMille, and Buzz Miller. She worked intimately with Broadway veterans including Gwen Verdon, and Chita Rivera. She was guest soloist for the New York City Opera. She continues to study and perform different African, Brazilian, Cuban and East Indian. Her expertise is in Theatre Dance which she has taught for over 25 years. Tinka currently is in her twelfth year of teaching at Cornish College of the Arts, both in the theatre and dance departments and continues to teach master classes with the Pacific Northwest Ballet and Spectrum Dance Theatre. She’s also on faculty with the Seattle Opera’s Young Artist Program and is currently teaching and coaching company classes for the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. Tinka also teaches in the Summer Dance Lab at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. For more information call us at 206.325.4161
