Three of Downtown Seattle’s most dynamic arts groups are joining forces to create an all-new pastiche of song and dance, fun and games, thrills and throwback in The Variety Show; a new collaboration between Donald Byrd’s Spectrum Dance Theater, Seattle Dance Project and ACT Theater’s Central Heating Lab. Performances will bounce back and forth between Spectrum Dance Theater’s Studio in Madrona and ACT’s Bullitt Cabaret from April 21 through May 7. The Variety Show is a dizzy mashup of original, short, unusual new pieces featuring some of Seattle’s finest dancers, choreographers and variety artists. It draws inspiration from sources as diverse as old television game shows, supper club floor shows and European cabaret, with contemporary winks to CBS’s Ed Sullivan and Dada’s Tristan Tzara. A dazzling array of short and very-short works features the choreography of Donald Byrd and up-and-comers Catherine Cabeen, Timothy Lynch, Eva Stone and Ezra Dickenson.
