Reading Contemporary Dance

A club for increasing literacy and appreciation for contemporary dance

WHAT

A membership group that through viewing and conversation seeks to enhance the members’ experience of attending contemporary dance performances every 3 to 4 months, Spectrum will select a series of performances/events to attend, and schedule in between performances discussions/ panels with guest speakers (dates to be determined)

HOW

A membership fee of $125 payable to Spectrum includes all ticket performances and discussions. To become a member, send us an email at club@spectrumdance.org and we will contact you

A duo of works by Spectrum Artistic Director, Donald Byrd
The world premiere of Interrupted Narratives/War a large-scale work that examines death, loss and how lives are interrupted and disrupted as a result of war. It explores the mental impact and emotional devastation of sudden unexpected death caused by armed conflict and how we grieve, memorialize and remember those we have lost. Living in East Podunk (2003), performed by Koresh Dance Company of Philadelphia a satirical piece that dares to "expose" the hidden drama, seductions, and domestic/sexual delights of ordinary small town life.

Theater will be opening the doors to the rehearsal process. Join us for a viewing of a working rehearsal of pieces from the
upcoming performance and a question and answer session with Artistic Director, Donald Byrd, and company dancers.

The first week of the Fall Studio Series brings a mixed repertory program of works with pieces created for
Spectrum Dance Theater and Donald Byrd/The Group. Spanning the last two decades of Donald Byrd's career Relationships
sees the return of audience favorites Drastic Cuts: Duet and Sentimental Cannibalism. Also on the program
is a unique opportunity to see two pieces which lead to the creation of 2007's Interrupted Narratives/War,
Byrd's exploration of the effects of the Iraq War. Interupted Narratives/War Skecth was premiered as a studio
piece in 2007 and served as an initial inquiry into the themes and subject of the full length work. Soap Box was conceived as a site specific piece originally performed in downtown Seattle at Westlake Park. Soap Box includes
voluntary audience participation. Have something on your mind? Want your opinions to be heard? Come prepared to take a
stand and speak out on the Soap Box.


Tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the door. A limited number of Studio Series Passes are available for $40.
A pass allows you to see as many performances as you like during the series (excluding the Opening Night Benefit on Oct 8).
Simply purchase the pass and RSVP at least 24 hrs in advance of the show you wish to attend.
