This July, Donald Byrd turns 60 and completes his 6th year as Spectrum Dance Theater’s artistic director. Please join us as we celebrate Donald’s milestone birthday and anniversary with Spectrum at a Byrd Birthday Bash (BBB) on Saturday, July 18th at the Spectrum Studios. We’ll toast Donald and Spectrum, dine under the stars, dance to Donald’s favorite tunes, and enjoy entertainment…Many surprises are in store!

Help us honor Donald on reaching these pinnacles. Come to the BBB and participate in creating a tribute book that will trace Donald’s career and include wishes, memories, reflections and dreams from his many supporters, friends, family and students. Through this effort we hope to raise $1,000 for each of Donald’s 60 extraordinary years, or $60,000 – which will ensure that the richness of Donald’s vanguard artistic vision will continue. We’ll continue to honor Donald’s birthday and artistic legacy this fall with a Byrd Retrospective Studio Series Festival, including some of the most vibrant and striking works in the Byrd repertory.

Under Donald’s artistic leadership, and with your loyal support, Spectrum has become a major center for contemporary dance in the Pacific Northwest. Our dance company has doubled its number of Seattle performances and now tours nationally and internationally. Spectrum has received numerous commissions from prestigious institutions, including Duke University and the University of Notre Dame, for ground-breaking choreography by Donald. These works increase the breadth of Donald’s legacy and give our dancers a position in history. Spectrum’s dance school has flourished, increasing classes to 70 each week and serving over 500 students of all ages. The Academy Program, entering its third year, remains the region’s first and only pre-professional contemporary dance program affiliated with a professional company.
